The Meaning Of Victory (意思の勝利, Ishi no Shōri) is the 88th chapter of the Gantz manga, written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku.

Cover Page[]

A battle-worn Masaru Kato in Gantz suit with a viscous liquid splattered over him and the stump of his arm tied up.

Synopsis[]

The chapter begins with Masaru Kato being savagely beaten by the Kannon's/Kiyoshi Miyafuji's new eight armed form. Masaru thinks of his brother, Ayumu Kato, using his strong desire to go back home to him as motivation, which allows him to land a blow on the Miyafuji's face, knocking off his glasses and causing him to bleed. Miyafuji doesn't stop, however, and continues his assault, pushing Masaru further back with every strike. Masaru begins to lose hope, thinking of his brother once again and recalling the death of Kei Kishimoto.

He then has a flashback about a time where he and Kei Kurono were in a bike race when they were younger, with Masaru wondering why Kurono never lost. He thinks that it may be because Kurono was always thinking "What if I lose?", and Masaru ponders on this more deeply.

Back to the actual fight, Masaru is punched through a piece of debris by Kiyoshi before he spots his dismembered arm holding the Kannon's sword a few feet away. Masaru rushes towards it, and grabs his arm before swinging it towards Kiyoshi, cutting off one of its arms. Masaru continues to do this until Kiyoshi's arms and head have been completely dismembered from his body. The chapter ends with Masaru collapsing to his knees and shouting that Kurono only needs to wait a little while longer before they can both go home.
